The Bounty Hunter is comprised of a diverse group of businesses units including its iconic direct mail catalogue, website, as well as its bar, restaurant and retail operation – Bounty Hunter Wine Bar, Smokin’ BBQ & Retail Shop. The “Wines We Make” portfolio of wines are crafted by consulting winemaker Tim Milos whose pedigree includes experience at Stags’ Leap Wine Cellars, Opus Wine and S. Anderson Vineyard. The Bounty Hunter wines take advantage of fruit or juice sourced from enviable producers and vineyards. The portfolio offers a selection of wines from everyday drinking to ultra luxury. The Justice series wines, utilizing fruit from two historic Beckstoffer vineyards, have received favorable recognition and notable scores from key critical audiences including Robert Parker, The Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast.

The Bounty Hunter additionally owns and operates a wine marketing services business Chatterbox. Recognizing the value of the Bounty Hunter’s own long standing direct relationship and marketing expertise, Chatterbox Wine Marketing was founded in 2009 to offer an additional sales channel to wineries through consumer direct marketing services. The company serves an expanding list of well-known established and up-and-coming wineries. Its services include email marketing, telesales, data evaluation and cleanup, and mobile optimization of websites. For over two decades The Bounty Hunter has built a recognized brand with profitable growth and success. The company is known as an industry leader in the catalogue and e-commerce categories and has distinguished itself as an innovative purveyor of wines and spirits. The bar and restaurant further contribute to its lifestyle brand status and there are current plans to expand the restaurants to multiple markets nationally. The ideal candidate will assume the reins of the company as CEO and will chart the future course for the Bounty Hunter building upon the solid foundation of brand-equity, established consumer and producer/supplier relationships and the diverse multi-platform sales and marketing channels. The company is well positioned and well capitalized for significant growth. This role requires a seasoned executive, knowledgeable and passionate about the wine business, with a clear strategic voice and perspective to expand the business to the next level.

The Bounty Hunter is the creation of Mark Pope; its dynamic founder and leader who has been actively involved in all aspects of the business since inception. Together with an outstanding operational team, many of whom have long tenures, Mark built the company from humble beginnings with tenacity, laser focus on quality and relationship building, and clear brand messaging. In early 2014 Mark sold the business to entrepreneur and international vintner Alejandro Buhlgeroni who could see the extraordinary potential for national and global growth and expansion of the Bounty Hunter brand. At the time of acquisition, Mark agreed to remain with the company continuing to shepherd and further the business and will serve as a knowledgeable advisor providing key insight through transition to new leadership. Mark will formally pass the baton in the spring of 2017, and the new CEO will assume the reins of a dynamic and well-run organization with ample prospects to grow.

This individual will be empowered to autonomously lead the business reporting directly to a professional Board of Directors. There is a willingness to invest in the business and this is evidenced today across a number of initiatives. In 2014, the company entered into a long-term lease to develop and occupy the Southwest corner of First and Main Streets in downtown Napa. The construction of a new 4 story flagship headquarters is in process and when completed will house all corporate operations, as well as the Bounty Hunter Wine Bar, expanded restaurant, smoke house and saloon, and culinary center. The project is due to be fully up and running in the next 12 – 18 months. There is a significant ERP implementation in progress arming the company with innovative and integrated business systems management technology to serve the company as it scales. With scale comes greater bottom line profitability that will in turn be reinvested in the business to fund additional growth.

The chosen candidate will provide leadership and stability to the organization as it turns the page to a new chapter. It is a strong professional team and day- to-day operations are ably handled freeing the CEO to focus on strategic imperatives across all platforms including enhancing and growing digital, ecommerce and social media capabilities in addition to driving the restaurant initiative. The stewardship of the relationships with the Bounty Hunter’s winery and spirits producers is a priority and one in which the CEO will play a key role. This individual will have the unique opportunity to directly oversee this business at an exciting point in its evolution and to build and implement an aggressive, intelligent growth strategy building upon the strengths of the catalogue, ecommerce, wine club, restaurant and retail, owned Bounty Hunter wine programs and direct marketing services business. Maintaining the Bounty Hunter’s well earned credibility and reputation among its large base of consumers, suppliers and employees is vital to continuing the company’s winning track record and expanding its position as a global marketer and producer of world-class wines and spirits.

The chosen candidate will take the helm of an increasingly profitable business with the charter to create and execute the future vision building upon the significant business assets. The goals are ambitious with a desire for substantial growth and the financial resources available to fund these ambitions. The compensation plan will be generous and tailored to the chosen candidate. Emphasis will be placed on connecting incentive compensation to results including the provision of a meaningful long-term component financially rewarding positive growth in company value. The CEO, reporting directly to Mr. Bulgheroni, will lead a team of approximately 100 employees and will office at the Bounty Hunter in Napa, California.


The primary role of the CEO is to meet or exceed the revenue, profits, and other qualitative goals of the Bounty Hunter. Reporting directly to ownership, the CEO will be fully empowered to develop and execute key operational, marketing, sales and growth strategies directed toward optimizing brand excellence, expanding consumer reach across all platforms, generating high demand resulting in customer acquisition, and increasing profits. The CEO will:

Near Term (12 month) Priorities

  • Provide continued leadership to a multiple discipline organization facilitating a smooth and seamless transition and maintaining the strong company identity internally and externally
  • Lead and direct the team in successfully executing against plans and goals to meet or exceed current financial and non-financial performance targets for the business as agreed upon with the Board of Directors
  • Promote a highly enjoyable, high performance and growth driven business environment where all team members feel valued and are working toward a common purpose
  • Act as an ambassador and face of the Bounty Hunter, actively representing the company to the outside world, including the local community, winery/spirits partners, consumers, etc., building relationships in all directions
  • Promptly engage and establish relationships with key vintner and spirit producers
  • Drive the brick and mortar growth strategy and tactical execution engaging in the process already in place to evaluate and find restaurant space
  • Initiate and complete a holistic strategic planning process identifying opportunities for aggressive business expansion and increased profitability including concentration on review and assessment of digital and ecommerce capabilities, catalogue business, wine clubs, branded wine business, restaurant and retail, and Chatterbox Wine Marketing
  • Oversee and participate in the design aspect of the flagship headquarters
  • Lead and collaborate with the Management Team the development of short and long-term business plans, sales and marketing goals, and budgets to achieve strategic goals, promote customer loyalty, and achieve sustainable competitive advantage
  • Review organizational structure and refine or make changes where required to achieve strategy and goals
  • Ensure organization buy in, training and full successful deployment of new ERP systems and resultant processes
  • Participate in the review of Bounty Hunter branded wines and make recommendations for future growth and evolution
  • Promote change, buy in and clarity around strategic objectives
  • Review the operation, evaluate and measure operational efficiency and implement necessary changes, where appropriate, to reduce cost structure
  • Hone and refine disciplined performance monitoring and measuring systems including company dashboard (key performance indicators) working to build a culture of analysis and fact based decision making


  • Represent the business to the outside world by building key relationships
  • Continue to refine and execute the company’s strategy to achieve targeted growth, revenue, and profitability and quality objectives and develop risk mitigation scenarios to ensure that results are met
  • Drive financial performance building sustainable profit and increased company equity
  • Identify new market opportunities and make recommendations with awareness of general market conditions, competitive activities, general economic conditions and governmental legislation and regulations impacting the business
  • Drive continued expansion and elevation of compelling and innovative digital and social media strategies and tactics to further amplify brand identity and drive customer acquisition and retention
  • Establish a working relationship with the board; communicating regularly with Board Chair, supported by monthly meetings and formal board meetings once a quarter
  • Continue to innovate and elevate the Bounty Hunter Catalogue direct mail initiatives, including personalization and SEO optimization, and drive further integration with ecommerce channels
  • Continue work on strategic and tactical plans focused specifically on expansion of the Bounty Hunter brick and mortar restaurant and retail outlets nationally
  • Develop operational and corporate policies and practices ensuring proper controls are in place to operate the business, including financial, accounting, human resources and compliance
  • Build and maintain strong management practices and governance through sound metrics, control systems and processes.
  • Continue to build team skills and strength and establish sound business performance systems to drive accountability and manage risk, and drive focused execution; mentor and develop strong future company leaders
  • Attract, hire and retain high quality employees and ensure proper staffing to maximize, productivity, profitability and quality; Identify, hire and develop key individuals as needed
  • Manage and resolve conflicts with vendors and customers


Candidates will be evaluated on their track record in increasingly responsible leadership positions, wine industry knowledge and experience, digital business familiarity and business acumen and success. Professional experience ideally includes:

  • Ten (10+) years of executive experience and responsibility for managing a team of 30+ people and a business with revenues in excess of $20m. Appropriate backgrounds would include executive leadership with CEO, COO, general management, marketing, or sales responsibility, ideally with organizations recognized for innovation and market leadership
  • Wine industry experience required with experience in luxury and lifestyle tier businesses with strong online positioning a plus
  • Personal passion for wine with strong world wine knowledge and an excellent palate
  • Top to top relationships within the wine industry with demonstrable relationships with vintners domestically and internationally and the demonstrated ability to readily establish rapport with a variety of audiences
  • Verifiable experience successfully leading an organization through evolutionary change
  • Verifiable success in brand positioning with a demonstrated understanding of current competition, competitive climate and future market trends
  • Broad knowledge, experience and demonstrated results growing profitable, direct sales channels through diverse direct marketing strategies and tactics including social media
  • Operations experience managing retail luxury brands, restaurants and/or consumer products a plus
  • Quantifiable results executing and building upon ecommerce strategy and tactics including website, ecommerce, and email
  • Experience developing and launching private label wine brands a plus
  • P&L responsibility with demonstrated operational savvy and strong bottom line orientation
  • Demonstrated ability to think creatively about market opportunities
  • Participation in transactions such as acquisitions, divestitures, primary and secondary financing ventures, etc.
  • A proven record for building and executing short and long term strategic and financial business plans with experience working with or reporting to ownership or a Board of Directors
  • Verifiable success building and developing well honed teams with demonstrated ability to hire well
  • Ideally, proven success working within an entrepreneurial environment
  • Demonstrated ability to deal persuasively with key customers and vendors with an ability to articulate and message exceedingly well
  • An undergraduate degree is essential. In addition, an MBA in marketing or finance would be a plus.
